Growers, Agronomists & Scientists on MaxSil™

Straight from the ABC Landline segment and Australian farms - why the people using MaxSil™ keep coming back.

    Tony Donovan
“We've taken winter weight gains from 0.7–0.8 a day to 1.4, and up to two kilos a day. We're growing as much grass or crop as we always have - in fact, more - and we're using at least 30% less.”
    Tony Donovan
    Farm Manager, Midfield Meats (VIC)
    David Archer
“A good quality silicon will attract iron. The iron moves away from the phosphate, releases it, so the roots can get at it. We sell it as a stimulant - it increases nutrient uptake efficiency.”

    Brendan Lloyd
“It's amorphous - so our silica doesn't have the respiratory issue. Not only is it helping farmers, it helps construction workers have a safer day.”
    Brendan Lloyd
    Co-founder, Sustainable Concrete Group
“There could be as much as 25 or 30% improvements in plant growth and plant productivity.”
Peter Norwood - Agronomist - ABC Landline
“The silicon is tying up iron and aluminium, which releases phosphorus, potassium and trace elements that were already there but unavailable. Releasing the equivalent of 200 kg of DAP per hectare.”
Tony Donovan - 14,000 ha VIC pasture & cropping
“It's a more pure form than other natural silica deposits or minerals, so it actually works better in our compost.”
Sean O'Brien - Soil Scientist - ABC Landline
“The extremely saline block had not supported a single blade of grass since we started cropping 50 years ago. After MaxSil™ we finally have a barley crop.”

"MaxSil works by improving plant uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium by enhancing root architecture and soil pH balance. That, in turn, reduces the need for extra fertiliser."
    The Chronicle
    Tony Donovan - Victorian producer

"Significantly reduce its reliance on applied fertiliser."

Victorian producer Tony Donovan, who runs a large-scale grazing, cropping and dairy operation near Warrnambool, said the shift toward silicon-based fertiliser had been driven by a need to get more out of soils already under pressure.

"We're a pretty intensive operation, about 14,000 hectares with five dairy farms, so getting as much natural help out of the soil as we can is really important to us," he said.

Mr Donovan said high iron and aluminium levels in his soils had historically locked up key nutrients like phosphorus and potassium, forcing the business to rely heavily on synthetic fertiliser inputs.

"What the silicon is doing is tying up that iron and aluminium, which in turn releases phosphorus, potassium and trace elements that were already there but unavailable," he said. "We've measured it - we've got tonnes of phosphorus sitting in the soil that we just couldn't access before."

After introducing silicon into the system, he said the business had been able to significantly reduce its reliance on applied fertiliser. "In some paddocks, we're releasing the equivalent of about 200 kilos of DAP (Di-Ammonium Phosphate)," he said. "At today's prices, that's extremely valuable. It has a huge economic impact on us."

Mr Donovan said the benefits were not just financial, but also reflected in plant and livestock performance. "Our plant health, our production and our stock health are all lifting," he said. "And when you start seeing that across both pasture and crops, that's when you start to take it seriously."

"There are better ways to grow" - Tassie Grower Turns to Australian-Made Silicon

"We view nitrogen … urea, as like sugar to a human. It's good for a short fix, not really sustainable, and not achieving the best outcomes for flavours and the growth of our fruit." Spreyton grower Marcus Burns has been using more natural supplements, including a silicon made in Australia from crushed glass, which helps elements in the ground to become more available to the plant. "It's working within our own environment and it's becoming a little bit more circular with what we're using," he said.
